Poop Scooping 101: How Much Do Dogs Poop?

Updated: Oct 11, 2022

When we first started Doody Bug this was actually a very relevant question to us. We wanted to know on average how many piles we

should expect to pick up from a backyard when we are poop scooping, based on how many dogs the customer has, and time in between visits. We find on average that most dogs poop between 2.5 to 3 times a day. Since we visit almost all of our yards on a weekly basis, a good rule of thumb is that we should end up scooping about 20 piles per week, per dog. So for instance, if one of our poop scooping service customers has 4 dogs, we should expect to scoop about 80 piles per a week. Its funny, sometimes we have customers that...forget...to tell us about a few extra dogs they have, but we catch on pretty quick.

But the story doesn't quite end there. Each time a dog poops, it doesn't just come out in one continuous piece. Typically each pile is actually made up of 2 to 3 turds, but they end up being very close to one another, if not on top of each other. On average dogs poop 0.5-0.75 pounds per day, but this really depends on size. So for every weekly visit we can expect to pick up 3.5-5.25 pounds per dog, with wide variations between larger and smaller breeds.

Finally, for us it is important to consider that on the first time visit, if the customer hasn't gotten the chance to pick up after their dogs, there is usually about 3 times the amount of poop left in the yard undergoing various states of decomposition. So for a 4 dog yard for instance, we might end up scooping about 240 separate piles of dog poop. Stay tuned for more poop related facts so you can impress all your work friends at the next cocktail party.
